Driver jailed in PA after GPS led to $12,000 in fines

    By Charlie Morasch

A truck driver spent the week before Christmas after a combination of bad GPS directions and expensive overweight fines nearly kept him there throughout the holiday.

Doug Madison went into lockup at the Greene County (PA) Prison on Monday, Dec. 19, when he was unable to pay $12,000 in overweight fines.

Madison had been pulled over after he left Interstate 79 and was caught hauling a chemical tanker on a county road with a 10-ton weight restriction.

The truck driver damaged trees, landscaping and water faucets before tow trucks had to remove the tractor-trailer from the cemetery.

The incident was not the first time a truck driver, relying on GPS navigation, was led down the wrong road or a dead end.

OOIDA member settles $7,100 overweight fine in PA town

    By Charlie Morasch

An OOIDA member nabbed for an expensive overweight fine in a Pennsylvania township won’t pay $7,100.

But he’s not happy about what he will pay.

Roy Griffin was ticketed and fined $7,100 in January after he said a GPS system sent him to a 5,000-pound limited road in East Whiteland Township, PA. This week, Griffin and an attorney worked out a deal that will allow him to make $25 payments and won’t bankrupt him.
