334 Parking Workers Join Local 25 In Boston
On February 8, workers at Central Parking in Boston and in surrounding communities voted to join Local 25. There are 334 workers in the bargaining unit.
“It’s unbelievable—I can’t wait to get the union,” said Abdi Yaqub, who works in downtown Boston. “I am thrilled to be a Teamster.”
Yaqub is originally from Somalia in East Africa, and most of the workers are from East Africa.
The final certification is on hold at the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for awhile, because the company intentionally had its supervisors vote in the election to tie it up at the NLRB. Local 25 is hopeful the NLRB will see through the company’s tactics.
“The workers won despite a vicious anti-worker, anti-union campaign waged by Central Parking,” said Sean M. O’Brien, Local 25 President. “However, these workers remained united and focused on improving their lives and winning job security as Teamsters. I want to thank the International Union’s Organizing Department for helping with this campaign.”
